The Skagit River system has become synonymous with the word "Steelhead" among fly-fishermen and women worldwide.
There are few places in the world that can offer a 20 plus pound Steelhead on the fly and nowhere will you find a more beautiful setting.
In addition to world-class Steelhead and all five Salmon species, Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden can also be found locally and all will take aggressively to a properly presented fly.

Although John's Guide Service does and can provide the fly-fisher person with all the proper equipment needed for a day out
on the river, most anglers seem to be more comfortable casting their own rods. This is especially true for anglers who desire
casting instruction or pointers on better presentation of their fly when not out on a guided trip.
Gear recommended for those wishing to use their own equipment:
For Steelhead, Sockeye Salmon, Pink Salmon, and Silver Salmon a quality 7 to 8 weight set up with
both a dry and sink tip line is recommended.(90-200 grain sink tips)
For King Salmon and Chum Salmon an 8 to 10 weight rod equipped with both a dry and sink tip line. Also (90-200 grain tip)
For Trout and Dolly Varden a 5 to 6 weight rod is perfect. Set up with both a dry line and intermediate sink tip.
For the Spey Rod angler, which rod and tip sections of choice you use I leave up to you. Whatever you're most comfortable with.
This area boasts many long stretches our fish hold in and wide open areas for back-casts and most days are spent traveling the rivers
from one gravel bar to the next so a good pair of high quality chest-waders and felt soled boots are also highly recommended.
John's Guide Service will provide all leader material and flies specialized for this area and its different species of fish. If
you would like to tie up some of your own flies to use on your trip we will be more than happy to recommend some patterns for you.

To figure out the weight of a fish from measurements taken try out our Fish Calculator:
All you need is the length of your fish and the girth of your fish,
and then type the values in the boxes provided below. GIVE IT A TRY!!
This is merely an approximation using a formula devised by the Fish and Wildlife Department from fish that were, weighed and measured.
