About John

Hi, my name is John Koenig, owner of John's Guide Service. I am 39 years old and no stranger to the Pacific Northwest. A fifth generation Washingtonian and second generation guide, I now reside in Rockport, Washington. Rockport, a town with a population of less than 500, sits in the foothills of the scenic and wild northern Cascade Mountains. I live within walking distance of both the Sauk River and now world famous Skagit River.

My family would tell you that I have been somewhat of a fishing and hunting nut since I was a child. Well, why not? I owe most of what I know to another professional guide, my grandfather; who passed on to me the love of the outdoors and the patience and understanding it takes to be a knowledgeable fisherman and guide. I have been a full time fishing and hunting guide here in Washington for over a decade now.

In the past I spent 10 Summers guiding in Alaska's Bristol Bay watershed, and managing a fishing camp called "Alaska Kingfishers" which targets the largest run of King Salmon in Alaska. I am now concentrating all my Summer efforts back here at home. I will try and run groups out of Alaska Kingfishers when availability allows at the camp, and if not I can certainly help you in booking your next trip up there.

Early Summers here in Washington will now include guiding for Hatchery Kings on the Skagit River along with Sturgeon and summer-run Steelhead in our local rivers along with preparing for the upcoming hunting season. I am always scouting for both deer and bear sign, looking for the prime areas to hunt each fall.

August and September are spent hunting the many berry fields of the North Cascades for bear and early archery deer, along with many Blue and Ruffed grouse to be had along the way. In October I go directly back into King Salmon mode both locally and on the coastal rivers of Washington, targeting not only Kings, but the other 4 species of Salmon on into December. From December - May I am guiding for the famous and much sought after Steelhead.

I am also the inventor of the still popular "John's Jigs" and have been featured in many outdoor magazines and books as well as television shows like "Cabela's Outfitter Journal" and "Columbia Country".

I am state and coast guard licensed, fully insured and first aid and CPR trained and certified.

I operate under a USFS permit on the Skagit System while fishing and in the North Cascade Foothills while guiding hunts.

With all this in mind, from beginner to experienced, from gear fisherman to fly fisherman, from bow hunter to rifle hunting, you can look forward to a very memorable and enjoyable day with John's Guide Service. For more information give us a call at (360) 853-9801. Thanks!
